Advisory Board

The Board supports the Commissioner of Integrated Design to provide independent and expert advice for the Premier of South Australia on key policy issues, strategies and major developments.  Board membership is drawn from individuals with expertise right across design disciplines, including: architecture, urban planning, landscape design, placemaking, public art, engineering, building and development; as well as governance, finance, technology and innovation.   Their experience and knowledge will be a vital link in providing impartial, evidence-based advice to the Premier, through the Commissioner for Integrated Design.  By sharing their knowledge and connections the Board will support and promote the aspirations and activities of the Commission. Advisory Board members are appointed by the Premier of South Australia.

Mr John Denton

Architect and Urban Designer

Director of Denton Corker Marshall and former Victorian Government Architect

John Denton is a Director of Denton Corker Marshall, one of the most significant and successful Australian owned international architecture and design practices with offices in Melbourne, London and Jakarta.  John is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) and in 1996 received the AIA’s highest honour, the Gold Medal.  He is also a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia. John was Victorian Government Architect from 2006-2008, advising the Premier and Cabinet on achieving better architecture and urban design outcomes. 

He is the chair of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and board member of several other boards in the field of art, design and innovation.

He has previously been chairman of the Australian Government Interim Advisory Board for the new Creative Industries Innovation Centre in Sydney. John received a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from Monash University, where he is an Adjunct Professor of Architecture in the Faculty of Art and Design.

 

 

Dr Elizabeth Farrelly

Author, Commentator and Former Architect

Dr Farrelly is a columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald and author of the books Blubberland: the dangers of happiness and Glenn Murcutt: Three Houses. She holds a PhD in architecture from the University of Sydney, where she is also Adjunct Associate Professor. Elizabeth has previously practiced as an architect in Auckland, London and Bristol and has been Assistant Editor of the Architectural Review in London. 

Her writing awards include the Marion Mahony Griffin Award, the Pascall Prize for Critical Writing, the Adrian Ashton Award and the Paris-based CICA award for international criticism. Elizabeth has previously been an independent Councilor for the City of Sydney and the inaugural chair of the Australia Award for Urban Design.

 

Professor Graeme Hugo

Professor of Geography, University of Adelaide

Professor Hugo is Director of the National Centre for Social Applications of Geographical Information Systems, an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He is highly regarded internationally as a demography expert with insights into the trends in the Australian and Asian populations. Graeme has authored over three hundred books, articles and chapters.

Professor Hugo is chair of the Advisory Committee on Demography and Liveability of the Commonwealth Department of Sustainable Environment, Water, Population and Communities and is a member of the Housing Supply Council and the Australian Statistics Advisory Committee. Graeme is also a member of the International Union for the Scientific Study Committee on Refugees and the South Australian Social Inclusion Board. He has previously held the position of president of the Australian Population Association and was a member of the National Population Council. 

 

Professor Catherin Bull

Emeritus Professor of Landscape Architecture, University of Melbourne

Catherin Bull is Emeritus Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Melbourne and Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology. Professor Bull is a highly regarded researcher and author of the multi award winning book New Conversations with an Old Landscape: Landscape architecture in Contemporary Australia. She is a member of the Built Environment Industry Innovation Council and chairs the OECD Global Science Forum on “Effective Urban Modeling to address Climate Change and Sustainability”. 

Catherin has served on numerous design review panels including for Adelaide’s Victoria Square, Sydney Olympic Park and Federation Square. She has acted as a Commissioner in the Land and Environment Court of NSW. Her experience as a landscape architect includes work with Bruce Mackenzie and Associates in Sydney and her own firm EBC, in Sydney and Hong Kong. She holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Melbourne and a doctorate from The Graduate School of Design at Harvard.

 

Mr Dan Hill

Strategic Design Lead, Helsinki Design Lab, Sitra

Dan Hill is a highly regarded designer with experience of product development and management in design, software and innovation, applied to sectors ranging from media and music to city government and academia. Dan has recently joined the internationally acclaimed Helsinki Design Lab (HDL) established by Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund http://helsinkidesignlab.org/ He was previously Urban Informatics Leader for Arup, a leading global firm of designers, engineers and planners. 

Dan is the former co-founder and Director of Web and Broadcast at global media brand Monocle, which publishes through multiple formats. He was previously Head of Interactive Technology and Design at the BBC and an organizer of the architecture and urbanism conference, Postopolis. Dan Hill’s website City of Sound is generally acclaimed as one of the leading architecture and urbanism websites.

 

Professor Janis Birkeland

Professor of Sustainable Design, University of Auckland

Professor Birkeland is Professor of Sustainable Design at University of Auckland School of Architecture and Planning. She is also Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology and has taught sustainable architecture in four Australian universities. Janis Birkeland combines skills from multiple disciplines, having previously practiced as an architect, urban designer, planner and attorney (USA).

She is an author of over 100 publications on sustainability and the built environment including two books, Positive Development: from Vicious Circles to Virtuous Cycles and Design for Sustainability. Janis is Co-president of the Australian National Sustainability Initiative, and serves on the board of Zero Waste Australia, Australian Green Development Forum and the Green Infrastructure Network.

 

Associate Professor Joanne Cys

Associate Professor in Interior Architecture, University of South Australia

Joanne Cys is Associate Professor in Interior Architecture at the University of South Australia’s School of Art, Architecture and Design.  She is Australia’s representative to the Global Design Network (GDN) and the Asia Pacific Space Designers Association (APSDA).  Joanne is the immediate past National President and Life Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). She is currently Acting Dean of Research Education for Uni SA’s Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences.

She has previously been chair of South Australian AIA Collaborations Steering Committee and past South Australian State DIA President. Joanne has previously practiced as a senior interior designer with a major architectural firm on medium to large scale commercial projects. Joanne holds a Bachelor of Arts (University of Adelaide), a Bachelor of Arts (Interior Design) and a Master of Architecture (University of South Australia).

 

Jim Hallion

Chief Executive, Department of the Premier and Cabinet

Jim is a member of Infrastructure Australia Council, Deputy Chair of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Infrastructure Working Group and member of the COAG Senior Officials Group. He was formerly Chief Executive of the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure.

Jim was previously a member of the Australian Logistics Council, Australian Road Forum, Standing Committee on Transport and Transport Agencies Chief Executives Forum. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers and of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia. Jim holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute.
